Americans are frankly incredibly lucky when it comes to their landscapes. Whilst we back home in old Blighty have some gorgeous locations, when it comes to the point of scale our land is lacking. In the USA (and Canada – just as spectacular for anyone interested, why not visit Banff national park?) they have unique vistas and views that are unmatched across the world – Yellowstone, Zion national park, the Rockies, the Nevada desert to name but a few. It seems that that landscape doesn’t do things by half. What makes North America truly beautiful (with apologies to the people and the culture, which are pretty good by themselves) is the stunning amount of nature they have. Part of the reason must be that the area itself is simply so big – to travel across the USA, for example, you would experience a huge number of different environments, climates and geographical features.
Do they really appreciate all that wonder? Who knows, but we have a creeping suspicion that native/tourist syndrome might play a part here. It’s that situation where you can live in a city or region for most of your life, but still not have gotten around to seeing the same amount of landmarks as a tourist would in a week. It sounds ridiculous, but the knowledge that they are always going to be there to visit, whenever you want to, makes you far less likely to go than if you are under an imposed timeframe. So, why not see the local sights as well as those further afield? NB
