More on Living France Magazine

The French culture is one that has been envied for years and years in Britain. One of my favourite films is a well known piece of cinema called Chocolat which was set in a rural French town in the late 1950’s. Cobbled streets, old women sitting in their doorways, rich wines and cheese and nearly every meal outside in the sunshine. I guess this sort of existence goes for many rural towns all over Europe, but I love the notion of working hard and relaxing equally as heartily as reward.

The vibrant sense of community with all it’s different characters seems to be a running theme throughout French cinema, especially in the world famous film Amélie. A young girl living in an idyllic Paris, despite the city atmosphere there are still little sub communities of people following the stereotype of ‘everybody knows everybody’.

I hate to say it, but it is becoming fewer and fewer place that still have that close knit social network, what with the internet and a higher level of national and international mobility, people are reaching out all over the world. This is a good thing, but I’m sure I’m not the only young person who wishes they could have legit nostalgia for ‘the good old days’, where villages were small, friendly and a little more self-sufficient than nowadays.
