We occasionally feel a little bit sorry for the horses involved in trialling, eventing and racing. Not simply because they are being placed in situations that are potentially dangerous and life threatening, but because they don’t get the rewards they deserve.
Jockeys and trainers can make millions upon millions of pounds from the successes of a good horse, and whilst there is a lot to be said for their role in whole business, we feel that at least some of the money should go to the horse. After all, whilst the jockey merely sits in top, occasionally whipping (don’t worry, we know that it actually takes a huge amount of skill and dedication to be a jockey, not to mention the physical fitness involved) whilst the horse puts in all the effort. Well, this should clearly not be the case. Until they are willing to more fairly split the money between horse and rider, perhaps halfway around the jockeys should have to dismount and finish the course on foot. It would make it a lot more entertaining to watch, that's for sure, and whenever they do get around to splitting the money perhaps the horses could put it towards a good lawyer who could say ‘My client doesn’t want to be put down because of an injury, thank you very much’.
