I remember (back when this was all fields) the days of a mere four (or five, depending on where you were) analogue channels. We didn’t even get channel 5 where I grew up, so even that represented a great luxury. Kids these days don’t know quite how lucky they are with their hundreds of channels, plus one channels if they’ve just missed something or hard drive recorders to pause, rewind and record live TV. We used to have videos, in terrible quality, and we were grateful for them.
What TV nowadays does more than anything is make me feel old. Of course, I don’t quite hold the views stated above – I actually think most of the advances in technology are really pretty neat and useful – but I can certainly understand them. TV really does shape who we are in probably far too great a way. The shows we watch, alongside the music we listen to and books we read and a multitude of other factors, shape our culture – making us who we are and who we identify with. Culture is however a fickle beast, for ever shifting and changing beyond our capabilities to keep up. But why bother? Embrace the culture that made you who you are today, after all, there’ll almost certainly be a repeat of that show you used to watch back when you were young on one of the many channels you now have access to.
