A lot of children at some point decide that they are going to start collecting something. For most this is stamps, pokemon cards, marbles… for me, it was old fashioned glass and clay bottles. For some reason I found the quality of glass to contain so much more meaning than plastic, the fact that even a grubby old medicine bottle could look nice as part of a room’s décor.
Over the years I trotted between charity shops, car boot sales and attics spending my hard earned pocket money on bottles of all shapes and sizes. I normally went for spindly little perfume vessels with elaborate detail or sturdy old fashioned medicine bottle on which the title and ingredients were cleverly embossed. This collection went on to take part in various photo shoots and art projects throughout my time in school and college, which is probably why I keep them stored away in the attic rather than getting rid of them.
They are just knick knacks of little to no use, but the translucent colours and reflections will always intrigue me. Coloured glass is particularly wonderful because it is stunning in itself, but it also creates art when paired with light. I love all those coloured crystals you can get to hang in the window, and my bottle collection did just that back in the days when I insisted my bookshelf was now to be my bottle shelf.
