Tendencias, or Tenmag as it is also commonly known, is one of those wonderfully trendy, uber-hip publications that deals with current fashion and culture, and as a result makes us feel really rather old.
It’s a little bit odd, is it not, that whenever we think of culture, of contemporary things, we instinctively turn to the young. We look to the emerging generations, those around 18-25, as the example of what is current, what is trendy, what is in. This is despite the fact that those older far outnumber those who can count themselves in this age-group, yet it is the music, fashion and culture loved by them that everyone caters to and regards as the best.
Perhaps this is fair, perhaps it is good that every generation has their own time in the spotlight, their own moment as those that the rest of the world takes their cue from. We can’t help but wonder whether, as medicine gets ever more advanced and people live to increasingly old ages with better qualities of life and a good grasp on their faculties, this might soon begin to shift upwards. Maybe soon the ‘young’ generation will include those up to around forty, still with more than half their life ahead of them. Perhaps not, and we will all be doomed to simply an ever longer life of being uncool. Who knows? Certainly not us. NB
