Knitting is an age old phenomenon that has taken the world by storm. It is hugely popular everywhere, and every town has at least one knitting circle where people go to discuss and practise their craft. Two types of knitting are know as English knitting, where the yarn to be knitted into fabric is held in the right hand, and continental knitting where the yarn is held in the left. The latter of these two forms severely dropped in popularity during the 1940’s due to the fact that continental knitting originated from Germany. As the relationship between Germany and the rest of the world crumbled, as did the popularity in their style of knitting, so it is unsurprising that during this time the English style of knitting rose a great deal in popularity.
Knitting by hand was a massively popular pastime in wartime England as part of the ‘make do and mend’ ethic, as well as the already strong sense of community people had during that time. It was relatively cheap and highly useful for darning old jumpers and using off cuts to make new ones, which was more efficient money-wise than discarding clothing altogether to by new shop made ones.
To this day hand knitting is extremely popular, especially amongst women, and still promotes a sense of community, neighbourly behaviour and individuality.
