All of the spas featured in this edition of Artravel are very similar, as I suppose they are so off the page. Minimalist but utterly luxurious, lots of low lighting, stone surfaces and fresh white towels and fluffy slippers.
For my 18th birthday my present was a day spa trip which, I have to say, was completely incredible. After a swim and an attempt at sunbathing (it was July, but let us not forget it’s also English weather) we went into a large wet room that looked as if it had been chiselled from the centre of a large block of black stone. The walls we smooth but with natural textures and in the centre of the room was a large bowl of ice positioned below a tube concealed by long, thin LED mood lights. Every now and again the tube shot more ice into the bowl and the lights would slowly change colour. There were three doors leading to a Steam Room, a Sauna and a Dry Heat room all of which were lined with wooden benches with odd little attempts at wooden pillows.
It was so relaxing to state the obvious, but it made me realise how boring it would be if I were a lady of leisure able to do this on a daily basis. I got a massage and a pedicure with limitless glasses of champagne, a sumptuously healthy meal then home. All in all, a trip to a place as beautiful as that is a treat and as much as I’d like a massage every day, special days like that are so much better after the wait.
