More on Scottish Islands Explorer Magazine

The Scottish Islands seem to be renowned for the high level of natural beauty and their remoteness from the rest of the UK. To the side of Scotland lies the Inner and Outer Hebrides, and to the North East lies the Orkney and Shetland Islands. Each island varies in size, some as small as 3 miles across, others the same size as small cities, and each has its own little quirk to define it from the rest. For example, Fair Isle is described as a birdwatcher’s heaven due to the Bird Observatory in the Northern part of the Island. The island of Foula has some of the highest cliffs in Britain which tourists can hike to, as well as a rock fault which is over 100 feet deep. If you fancy a Whisky-based trip, there are no less than eight distilleries on the Inner Hebrides island of Islay, where visitors can go watch the works in progress. If it’s a bit of historical architecture you’re after, head to Bute’s castle, grand old mansion and sweet little chapel, or over to Cumbrae for the 1851 Cathedral! Perhaps the most famous landmark of the Scottish Islands are the Callanish Stones, which are situated on the Outer Hebrides island of Lewis. They were build somewhere between 2900 and 2600 BC and mark the entrance of an ancient burial ground, as human remains are still being found there.
